Flocculants & Flotation Agents

The most economical process for manufacturing phosphoric acid is a decades-old process that entails treating phosphate rock with sulfuric acid or, more commonly, with mixtures of sulfuric and phosphoric acid to precipitate out calcium sulfate and release phosphoric acid. Flocculants for phosphoric acid production process, also known as the wet process for phosphoric acid, provide one of the most important intermediates for fertilizer production and other phosphate products.

There are various processes used for phosphoric acid Manufacture. Typically, fertilizer production includes a concentration of a filtered dehydrate phosphoric acid (24-28% of P2O5) or semi-hydrate phosphoric acid (35-38% of P2O5) to an acceptable level for further use by several stages of evaporation techniques and combinations thereof, most of which are well known by the people skilled in the art. The resulting phosphoric acid is further concentrated to different acid strengths ranging from 40-42% to 72-76% acid (on a P2O5% basis) during such evaporation processes. However, it is worth noting that the filtered acid often contains many impurities (including inorganic like metal salts and organics like slime) that originate from the mined phosphate rock that is dispersed within the acid liquor to form the phosphoric acid slurry.

The presence of impurities very frequently leads to scale deposit formation on surfaces due to the changes in the impurity’s solubility because of temperature changes. Scale formation in pipelines and equipment like heat ex-changer reduces the flow rate and heat transfer, and as a result, the overall evaporation productivity decreases. Therefore, a typical operating cycle for many such phosphoric acid plants is 6-14 days. A cleaning (or maintenance) cycle is usually 1.5-2.5 days, varying in the degree of scale formation, size of scales, and composition of scales.

For built-up scales, Egypt Oil provides several excellent methods of descaling a phosphoric acid production system. Egypt Oil also has many options for preventive treatment of scaling in phosphoric acid systems, and this method is known as anti-scaling, with the products being called antiscalants. Worldwide, it is well known that the process of phosphoric acid concentration through various stages of evaporation, filtration, etc., is quite energy-consuming; for instance, the consumption of steam in this section of the process can often be as high as 3.5 tons per 1 ton of P2O5.

How Do Flocculants and Filtration Aids Come Into Play?

The higher economic viability of a phosphoric acid concentration process is directly correlated to a growth in productivity based on the efficient, sustainable operation of evaporation and filtration sections of the process. Flocculants and Flotation Agents for P2O5 are chemicals added to systems to enhance the process of flocculation, a process in which particles coagulate and settle at the bottom to give clear liquid on the top. Flocculants and filtration additives are typically used in mining applications and phosphoric acid production plants in the fertilizer industry. Egypt Oil offers a wide range of filtration aids, crystal habit modifiers, and flocculants for all fertilizer industry applications. Using Egypt Oil’s process additives for, filtration and flotation agents, it is easy to get:

  • Better Water Quality And Clarity
  • Environmental Compliance / Clean Water To Discharge
  • More Efficient Return Of Water To Mineral Handling And Flotation Process

Apart from the obvious advantages, there are advantages more down the stream that can be obtained using high-quality flocculants. Good flocculants and crystal habit modifiers will avoid filter cloth tears and damage, prevent the P2O5 product from escaping the gypsum, and be easy to handle and apply.  Egypt Oil’s Green Technology-based solutions have all these advantages; moreover, they are very economical because of their high efficiency and high cost-effectiveness. Egypt Oil has a wide range of mining products such as Flocculants and Flotation Agents for P2O5, Flocculants for Phosphoric Acid, Flotation Agents, and Flotation Agents for phosphate any more.

Frothers/Foaming Agents

Frothers reduce the surface tension of the gas-liquid interface to generate froth, stabilize bubble size, and provide hydrophobic particle adhesion to gas bubbles. Egypt Oil has an excellent range of frothers and foaming agents that generate stable froth that holds minerals well on top of the flotation cell, is easy to take out, and subsides swiftly for better downstream processing.

Silica Collectors

In the mining of ores and their beneficiation, there are often minerals and their associated gangue that do not possess sufficient hydrophobicity or hydrophilicity to result in an apt separation even after proper froth flotation. Thus, various other additives are often used in froth flotation to enhance the properties of appropriate minerals to get an economically feasible separation. Collectors are an example of additives that improve the hydrophobicity and hence the floatability of different minerals. Effective collectors must be able to:

1. Selectively attach or “glue” to the target molecule or molecules almost exclusively to other molecules that are present;

2. Hold the attachment well even with the high shear and stress related to flotation; and,

3. Furnish the target species or molecules amply hydrophobic to allow an acceptable level of separation.

For ores that contain silica, it is often economically beneficial to remove the silica early on in the process. With Egypt Oil’s latest silica collectors, it is possible to get the following benefits:

  • High Recovery of Silica
  • Drastic Reduction In Silica Carryover
  • High Selectivity

Another advantage of our silica collectors is that they are available in three different forms: solid flakes, concentrated paste, and ready-to-apply liquid.

Vegetable Fatty Acid Collectors

Egypt Oil’s prime innovation and achievement is in utilizing naturally available substances that can substitute the synthetic chemicals in the fertilizer industry sustainably and cost-effectively. Here are some of the major benefits of our Green Technology collectors for mining or rock beneficiation:

1. Vegetable Fatty Acids Based

Biodegradability provides an indication of the persistence of any particular substance in the environment and is the yardstick for assessing the eco-friendliness of substances. The superior biodegradation of vegetable oils in comparison to petroleum-based oils has been demonstrated at length by a plethora of researchers from around the world over several decades. It is clear that vegetable fats and oil have much better biodegradability and environment friendliness than the conventional products used as collectors.

2. Customized To Select The Molecules As Per Ore Characteristics

All of our products are customized as per the mineral ore to optimize the process and selectivity. Our decades of application expertise and state-of-the-art flotation laboratories around the world enable us to develop the best product for each mineral type, design the optimal application system, monitor product performance, and customize the formulations as needed over time. Customizing the products and application methods allows us to maximize the grade of the product and the amount of ore recovered through the flotation process.

3. Can Include Frother And Surfactant In The Same Formulation

When the collector contains frothers and surfactants, there is no need to add them separately; thus, the entire process becomes less cumbersome and easy to operate.

4. Higher Efficiency Compared To Conventional Collectors/Petroleum Derivatives/Sulfonates

Our Vegetable Oil-based collectors show higher efficiency than their petroleum-based counterparts due to many reasons, some of which include: better selectivity for the targeted ore and a higher concentration of active material often resulting in lower dosages.

5. Best Suited For Safe And Sustainable Operations, Easy Disposal, And Better Working Conditions

Conventionally, collectors for rock beneficiation often contain petroleum derivatives, synthetic resins, and their associated fractions and distillates. These products are usually obtained from crude oil and its distillates and similar compounds thereof. Therefore, the use of these products is not only harmful to the soil, plants, and the environment, in general, but also has a significant amount of costs attached when the Mines / Beneficiation Plant try to treat the effluents for water reuse or for disposal. With Egypt Oil’s Green Technology products for rock beneficiation, all such problems, costs, and environmental threats are avoided!

To keep fertilizer granules/prills free-flowing Egypt Oil offers a wide range of anti-caking agents for fertilizers like Urea, ANP, CAN, AN, DAP, NPK and other complex fertilizers. For phosphatic and complex fertilizers we provide EGYCOAT range. Similarly, for Urea EGYURECOAT range with a wide range of formulations. Fertilizers are coated with these anti-caking agents remains free-flowing even after a long duration of storage under high temperature and pressure adverse climatic conditions. These Anti-caking agents are easy to use formulations, which can be conveniently sprayed on granules/ prills over a moving conveyor or at transfer points, or inside a coating drum. Apart from the anti-caking effect, these coating agents also function as dust suppressors. They change the post-production crystal-forming tendencies thus checking the crystal bridging, caking, and dust generation. They are generally dozed in the range of 0.2 to 0.5 kg per ton of fertilizer.

ANTICAKING AGENT

Caking is a complex phenomenon. It is primarily dependent on the chemical composition of the Fertilizer. Depending upon the chemical composition, different fertilizers have different CRH (Critical Relative Humidity). The CRH for various Fertilizers are as given below:

UREA 72.5
AMMONIUM NITRATE 59.5
AMMONIUM CHLORIDE 77.2
CALCIUM NITRATE 46.7
DAP 82.5
MAP 91.6
CALCIUM NITRATE + AMMONIUM NITRATE 23.5
AMMONIUM NITRATE+ AMMONIUM CHLORIDE 18.1

Low CRH of fertilizer means, it will absorb moisture from the environment. Hence, such fertilizers are more prone to moisture absorption and caking.
The caking phenomenon is further accelerated by the presence of moisture, pressure and storage conditions.
Neelam Aqua & Speciality Chem manufactures anticaking agents for a wide variety of applications.
We have specialized anticaking agents for granular NPK / DAP/MAP fertilizers. Depending upon the grade of fertilizers like 15-15-15 or 19-19-19, or 28-28-0, the most suitable anticaking agent is suggested. A brief list of anticaking agent for NPK fertilizers are as given below:

SLOW RELEASE OF NITROGEN

Neelam Aqua manufactures compounds- EGYCOAT 1N 1000- for the slow release of Nitrogen. These compounds are suitably blended with the nitrogenous fertilizer.

It delays the hydrolysis of Nitrogenous fertilizer and makes nutrient available to the plants over a long period.

The excessive build-up of ammonia is reduced. Also, the nitrogen loss through ammonia volatilization is reduced. The continuous & steady uptake of nitrogen by the plants results in higher crop yield.

Our customers are our partners in problem-solving because the conditions vary from plant to plant and since the optimum results depend on the correct treatment. Hence, we at Neelam Aqua believe in adopting the scientific approach.

EGYCOAT NML ( OMRI Listed )

Urea is the major source of Nitrogenous fertilizer world wide. However, a large part of the Nitrogen from Urea is lost and does not add to the nutrient value. With the increasing cost of Urea production, it is becoming important to save and judiciously use every part of the urea prill. “Nitrogen from Urea is released in the soil and leached by the activity of nitrifying bacteria Nitrobacter and Nitrosomonas. These bacterias turn nitrogen in nitrite and then into nitrate which is highly mobile in nature when present in the soil. By these processes, approximate 50% to 65% of nitrogen provided by urea is lost. A solution to this problem of nitrogen loss from urea is to coat the area with “EGYCOAT NM L”.
